He is the first researcher from Slovenia to be awarded the European Research Council Advanced Grant for exceptional established research leaders.
Prof. Dr. Dragan Mihailović, Head of the Complex Matter Department at the Jožef Stefan Institute and Vice-Dean of the Jožef Stefan International postgraduate School, is the first holder of the ERC Advanced Grant for established researchers in Slovenia. The grant was awarded for the project Coherent trajectories through symmetry breaking transitions. ERC grants amount to 2.5 million Euro, but the exact number will be defined in the contract, which has not been signed yet.
ERC Advanced Grants allow exceptional established research leaders of any nationality and any age to pursue ground-breaking, high-risk projects that open new directions in their respective research fields or other domains.
On this occasion, the Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport Dr. Žiga Turk congratulated Prof. Dr. Dragan Mihailović: "It is a great recognition to you as a researcher and to the entire Slovenian science as well," said the Minister and added: "The European Research Council (ERC) is a relatively young European institution, however it has already gained reputation among the EU member states and throughout the world through financing of ground-breaking research projects. Due to its reputation for encouraging scientific excellence in all research fields and due to the non-restricting policy which enables researchers from outside of the EU, who wish to continue their scientific path in Europe, to apply, the competition is very tough. Among applicants are also esteemed individuals, such as Nobel Prize winners. In some recent cases, the Nobel Prize was also given to scientists, who are working on an ERC project.”

Prof. Dr. Dragan Mihailović graduated in 1979 and obtained a PhD in 1983 at the Oxford University. From 1983, he mostly worked at the Jožef Stefan Institute, where he is now the Head of the Complex Matter Department. From 2004, he also runs the Center of Excellence: Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. From that year on, he is also the Vice-Dean of the Jožef Stefan International Postgraduate School. His research fields are nanotechnology and use of nanomaterials, especially inorganic molecular nanowires, as well as research of electronic ordering in complex materials on a femtosecond time scale. In Slovenia, he introduced new fields of femtosecond spectroscopy, experimental research of fullerene and high-temperature superconductors, and more recently nanoelectronics and molecular electronics. In 1988, he received the Boris Kidrič Prize and in 2002 the Zois Award for outstanding achievements in science.

The lecture, entitled "Oxidative Halogenation with “Green” Oxidants: Oxygen and Hydrogen Peroxide" will be held on Tuesday, 4 September, 2012, at 9:00 a.m. at IPS Lecture Room (N-205).

Abstract

Oxidative Halogenation with “Green” Oxidants: Oxygen and Hydrogen Peroxide

It is difficult to imagine organic chemistry without organo-halogen compounds and the molecular halogens needed for their preparation. The halogens have very different reactivity, with iodine usually requiring some form of activation, while others are reactive and hazardous chemicals. To avoid their use, various modified reagents have been discovered (N-bromo- and N-chlorosuccinimide, Selectfluor, …), but halogens are still used to prepare these reagents and when they are used the atom economy is poor. A better approach, which is based on biomimetic research on oxidative halogenation in nature, consists of generating the halogenating reagent in situ under acidic conditions from a halide salt. The result of such a reaction is halogenation with 100% halogen atom economy. Suitable oxidants for the oxidation of halides are hydrogen peroxide and oxygen.
