Prof. Dr. Zdravko Kutnjak from the Department of Condensed Matter Physics (F5) of the Jožef Stefan Institute and professor at the Jožef Stefan International Postgraduate School won the prize for the best supervisor of the year 2013.
The prize is given every year by the Society of Young Researchers of Slovenia and is presented to the best Slovenian supervisors of young researchers and doctoral degree students. Prof. Dr. Zdravko Kutnjak was chosen among 82 nominated supervisors. The solemn ceremony took place on 27 November 2013 at the Kosovel Hall of the Cankarjev Dom Culture and Congress Centre.

Among the award winners are also our colleagues Prof. Dr. Nada Lavrač and Asst. Prof. Dr. Saša Novak Krmpotič from the Jožef Stefan Institute and the Jožef Stefan International Postgraduate School.
Prof. Lavrač received the award for her outstanding achievements in intelligent data analysis, and Prof. Novak Krmpotič for her outstanding achievements in the field of materials.

Young researcher Katarina Maher (B1) received an award for the best poster in the field of innate immunity at the 15th International Congress of Immunology.
The 15th International Congress of Immunology, which was held in Milan from 22 to 27 August 2013, attracted a turnout of more than 7000 participants among which several Nobel Prize winners. Katarina Maher, young researcher at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the Jožef Stefan Institute, received an award for the best poster in the field of innate immunology. The award is given by a prominent journal Trends in Immunology and represents a great recognition on the part of the top immunologists to the doctoral work of Katarina Maher, her supervisor Asst. Prof. Nataša Kopitar Jerala and the entire department.

Grain growth is a common phenomenon occurring during the fabrication of polycrystalline materials. Grain growth has conventionally been categorized into two types: normal and abnormal. Normal grain growth is characterized by a unimodal and invariable relative grain size distribution (relative size distribution of grains with respect to the average sized grain) as a function of the annealing time. The grain growth kinetics can be well described by the classical grain growth laws. On the other hand, abnormal grain growth is characterized by a bimodal size distribution of grains and a variable relative size distribution with the annealing time (nonstationary grain growth).

This presentation provides information about our recent theoretical as well as experimental results pertaining to grain growth behavior and its control in polycrystalline materials. A close correlation has been found between the grain growth behavior and the structure of the interface [1-4]. When the interface is faceted (atomically ordered), nonstationary grain growth occurs. For rounded (rough, atomically disordered) interfaces, normal (in another word, stationary) grain growth occurs. The difference in grain growth behavior for faceted and rough systems, nonstationary and stationary, is attributed to the difference in the dependence of the growth rate on the driving force: that is, linear for rough interface and non-linear for faceted interface [3-5]. According to theoretical as well as experimental results on the growth of faceted crystals, the nonlinear behavior exhibits a critical driving force, below which the rate is inconsiderable while above which the rate is linearly proportional to the driving force [6,7]. Grain growth behavior during annealing of polycrystals is predicted in terms of the maximum driving force Δgmax relative to the critical driving force Δgc: normal for Δgc = 0, pseudo-normal for Δgmax >> Δgc > 0, abnormal for Δgmax ≥ Δgc > 0, and stagnant for Δgmax << Δgc [5,8]. A number of experimental results support the above theoretical prediction of grain growth behavior, showing the generality of our suggested principle of microstructural evolution. Application of the microstructure evolution principle is also demonstrated for fabrication of single crystals.

The IPS Senate has on 11 June 2013 decided, that the candidates, enrolled for the first time in the study year 2011/2012 or later, wishing to acquire their master or doctoral degrees at IPS shall submit to the IPS Senate their applications for the topic of their master thesis or doctoral dissertation by the end of the 4th semester at the latest, that is until September 30th, using the application form “Application for Registration of the Topic of Master Thesis” or “Application for Registration of the Topic of Doctoral Dissertation”, respectively.

Doctoral Studies Enrolment Requirements:
Students eligible to apply for enrolment into doctoral study programmes have graduated from:
•    a 2nd cycle study programme,
•    a direct master’s degree study programme, if evaluated with 300 credit points,
•    an earlier (before Bologna declaration) study programme for the university degree.

Graduates from earlier study programmes for acquiring specialisation who have concluded professional higher education programme have to fulfil study obligations worth 30 credit points of individual research work to enrol in the third-cycle study programme.
Graduates from earlier study programmes for acquiring the master degree or specialisation who have concluded the study programme for university degree shall be given recognition for 60 credit points worth of study obligations in the third-cycle doctoral study programme.

Master Studies Enrolment Requirements:
Eligible for enrolment in the first academic year of second-cycle study programmes are candidates who have graduated in the first-cycle study programmes in natural sciences, technical disciplines or computer science earning at least 180 credit points, or have completed higher education studies in these fields comprising at least three years of lectures. Candidates must also be proficient in English, which they can prove by language proficiency certificates.
Graduates from first-cycle study programmes in other disciplines, totalling 180 credit points, should address their applications to the IPS Study Commission, which defines study obligations to be met by candidates before enrolment in the first academic year. These obligations are defined from the teaching modules of the first-cycle study programme depending on the dissimilarity of the disciplines concerned, and total between 10 and 60 credit points. Candidates can fulfil these obligations either during their first-cycle degree studies, through advanced training programmes or by passing the relevant exams before enrolment in the master’s degree study programme.
Candidates who have completed first-cycle undergraduate study programmes, totalling 240 KT, in natural sciences, technical disciplines or computer science may enrol in the second academic year of the second-cycle studies and will be given recognition for 60 credit points worth of study obligations. On enrolment, their compulsory exams earning 18 to 21 credit points will be individually determined so that they can obtain knowledge and skills complementary to their previous studies. The student shall additionally have to acquire 60 credit points from individual research work, master thesis and other selected courses.
Other candidates that acquired more than 180 credit points during their undergraduate studies, specialist studies or in some other forms of education can address a request to the IPS Study Commission, which will discuss each case separately and determine the number of recognized second-cycle study obligations (60 credit points to the maximum).
In case of limited admission, the Study Commission shall prepare the list of accepted candidates on the basis of the following criteria: Achievements in first-cycle (average and diploma grades) and undergraduate studies, eventual work experience and other study or research achievements, prizes and awards stated in the CV and letter of motivation for studies.

Detailed Description of Study Programmes:
1.    The programme Nanosciences and Nanotechnologies comprises:
-  nanomaterials: functional and quantum nanomaterials, magnetic nanoparticles, nanoceramics, nanowires, layered and single-layered nanomaterials

The lecture, entitled "The use of passive samplers in the determination of emerging contaminants in aquatic environment" will be held on Thursday, 9 May 2013, at 2:00 p.m. at Kolar's Lecture Hall K-7.

Abstract

The use of passive samplers in the determination of emerging contaminants in aquatic environment

Passive samplers represent an innovative monitoring tool for time-integrated determination of micropollutants in water. The principle of passive sampling is in-situ deployment of a device capable of accumulating contaminants dissolved in water via diffusion and sorption processes. After sampling the contaminants are extracted and analysed, allowing the quantification of their time-weighted average concentrations in water. These data can then be used to complement chemical analysis of priority and emerging contaminants, which are difficult to follow by conventional sampling methods.

We will discuss strategies for sampler design, calibration, in-situ sampling and quality-control issues, and the advantages and challenges associated with passive sampling of emerging contaminants in the aquatic environment. Typical applications and prospects for upgrading passive samplers as a tool for environmental quality assessment will be presented.

Electroplated ferromagnetic nanostructures with reduced dimensionality

Chemically ordered and disordered equiatomic Fe-Pd nanostructures represent a promising magnetic storage media and potential nano- and micro-magnets which can be used in micro- and nano-systems. In addition the magnetic shape memory alloys like Fe70Pd30, where reversible strains of several percents are achieved in modest magnetic fields, also represent an interesting class of materials to be used as nanoactuators. Fe-Pd-based thin films, nanotubes and nanowires produced via (template-assisted) electroplating will be discussed from the electrochemical synthesis and magnetic properties point of view, with the emphasis on the composition, morphology and the crystal structure influence. Furthermore the magnetic shape memory Fe70Pd30 nanostructures will be assessed as potential smart drug delivery agents.

At the 5th IPSSC Conference, the IPS students will present their research approaches and achievements, as well as the possibilities of implementing the results into practice, to the representatives from industry and other visitors with posters and through direct contact.
The conference is intended to establish contacts between students, researchers and companies, to raise awareness among students of the research needs and methods of development in industry, as well as to offer the representatives of companies the information and direct contact with the research and potential candidates. Cosylab d.d is looking for a candidate enrolled in a doctoral study programme to employ her/him for 2,5 years with the possibility of permanent employment.

Cosylab d.d. applied to the “KROP” public tender, but one of the potential candidates did not meet the criteria for the position of a young researcher (detailed description under A1). The candidate should have one of the priority profiles from the field of technical sciences: physics, electrical engineering, computer science, mathematics, economics etc.

A1: Employment or training of a young researcher enrolled into postgraduate studies

The co-financing may include employment of a young researcher for full time or work of an already employed researcher [1] enrolled into postgraduate studies for full time. The candidate must meet the following criteria for young researchers:
•    At the time of enrolment, the candidate must not be over 35 years old. If the candidate is enrolling into the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year of postgraduate studies, the age limit is accordingly raised to over 35, namely one year is added based on each year the candidate was enrolled into in the previous year. The age limit can also be raised in the event of a longer sick leave, parental leave in the time of postgraduate studies or other reasons if the prolongation of studies is approved by the higher education institution.
•    The candidate has never before had the status of a young researcher through the Slovenian Research Agency or the Slovenian Technology Agency, and did not receive public funds for the co-financing of doctoral studies. Within this public tender, the status of a young researcher serves as a confirmation of enrolment into the 1st, 2nd or 3rd year of postgraduate studies in the Bologna 3rd cycle study programme.

A young researcher must perform basic research in the framework of the operation.

The documents of meeting the criteria: enrolment certificate stating the student is enrolled into a postgraduate study programme and a confirmation of employment for full time in the organisation of the applicant. In the event of enrolment into the 4th year of postgraduate studies through the previous (non-Bologna) study programme, the candidate must also submit a senate decision from the higher education institution allowing him/her a direct transfer to doctoral studies or a scientific title “magister znanosti”.
