Povzetek

The use of passive samplers in the determination of emerging contaminants in aquatic environment

Passive samplers represent an innovative monitoring tool for time-integrated determination of micropollutants in water. The principle of passive sampling is in-situ deployment of a device capable of accumulating contaminants dissolved in water via diffusion and sorption processes. After sampling the contaminants are extracted and analysed, allowing the quantification of their time-weighted average concentrations in water. These data can then be used to complement chemical analysis of priority and emerging contaminants, which are difficult to follow by conventional sampling methods.

We will discuss strategies for sampler design, calibration, in-situ sampling and quality-control issues, and the advantages and challenges associated with passive sampling of emerging contaminants in the aquatic environment. Typical applications and prospects for upgrading passive samplers as a tool for environmental quality assessment will be presented.
