Using Fluorescence in Photobiont Detection

Goals:

Ability useful integration of physical, chemical and ecological knowledge for the preparation and use of sensors to detect harmful algal in the aquatic environment.

Communication skills and project work with experts in the field of manufacturing of sensors to detect harmful algal in the aquatic environment.

Content:

• How to understand the phenomenon of harmful algal blooms (HAB) and cyanobacteria (CyanoHAB) in surface water bodies based on understanding of the ecology and ecophysiology of aquatic photobionts - detection methods from laboratory cultures to the ecosystem.
• Using epifluorescence microscopy to evaluate the physiology of photobionts (Kautský's effect, photosynthetic unit and energy transfer).
• Electromagnetic Energy - reflection and absorption of light in nature as the basis for the selection and use of sensor types.
• Comparative analysis of different photobiont metabolic states that can be perceived by the sensors (devices for trapping light in photobionts, photosynthesis, acclimation of organisms to light, fluorescence of chlorophyll in vitro and in vivo and analysis, phycocyanin fluorescence analysis, fluorescence signal, photochemical quenching, nonphotochemical quenching, taxonomic determination using spectral analysis).
• Sensors and platforms for photobiont detection, stress state, remote sensing image analysis (active sensors, passive sensors, ground measurements, remote sensing).
• Early warning systems of harmful algal blooms based sensorics.
