Internet Connected Embedded Devices

Goals:

Objectives:
• Knowing the benefits and principles of interconnecting embedded devices and their accessibility through the Internet using standardized communication technologies and protocols.
• Understanding the steps required for the design of a system for transfer and storing of data collected from sensors.
• Defining the system and network architecture with respect to application requirements.
• Comparing and choosing the most suitable suite of communication technologies and protocols for implementation of the access to sensor data and management of sensor devices for given application requirements and operating conditions.
• Implementing the Internet access to sensor data and sensor devices.

Competences:
• Ability for comparative analysis for selecting appropriate communication technology and protocol suite for the provision of Internet access to sensor devices for given specific application requirements and operating conditions.
• System architecture design for the Internet access to sensor data and management of sensor devices.
• Constructing an operational system with the Internet access to sensor devices.
• Consideration of restricted capabilities of embedded devices in designing Internet connectivity.
• Capability of using and managing Internet connected sensor devices for experimental work in the chosen area of doctoral research.

Content:

• System architecture, communication technology and protocol aspects of Internet connectivity of embedded devices and sensor networks.
• Comparison of representative platforms for design of networked embedded devices from the operational aspects (processing capabilities, connectivity, energy consumption, usability, etc.).
• Application requirements’ based design of Internet access to networked embedded devices and sensor data.
• Middleware platforms for storing and accessing sensor data and for sensor network management.
• Detailed individual study of a real case from student’s research work: selection of the most suitable design of sensor data access based on comparative analysis of alternative communication technologies and protocols.
