Course Description

Toxicology in Industry

Program

Ecotechnologies, third-level study programme

Goals:

To introduce the students with the basics of toxicology focused on the needs of different chemical industries. The students will gain basic knowledge on toxicological principles; they will be introduced to basic toxicity test systems and new molecular biological approaches. Through exercises and seminars they will be familiarized with selected test systems and use of toxicological data for hazard and risk assessment for humans and environment.

The students will acquire necessary understanding of toxicology for the purposes of chemical safety in industry and for implementation of the rules concerning chemical safety.

Content:

1. Introduction: basic concepts of hazard and toxicity, dose-response relationships – drugs, poisons and nutrients, natural and synthetic chemicals, homeostasis, avoiding poisoning.

2. Factors affecting risk of poisoning: how substances move through environment, how effective exposure depends on the route of exposure, how toxic effects depend upon how the body reacts with chemicals (toxicokinetics, toxicodynamics), effects on organs, specific toxic effects (carcinogenesis, mutagenesis, reproductive toxicity, immunnotoxicity) and their molecular mechanisms, effects of combined exposures, differences between acute and chronic exposure.

3. Sources and use of toxicological data: Toxicological testings (in vivo, in vitro, toxicogenomics), interpretation of data, hazard assessment, exposure monitoring.

4. Common types of chemicals that cause health threats: solvents, metals, acids and bases, pesticides

5. Practical work with selected toxicological methods and practical work on the use of toxicological data for hazard assessment.
