ERASMUS+ TRAINEESHIP AT HELMHOLTZ-ZENTRUM HEREON

Exploring zirconium conversion coatings

Erasmus+ traineeship at Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon

Published: 14. nov. 2025

I am sincerely grateful for the opportunity to once again participate in a two-week doctoral visit to Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon, supported by the ERASMUS+ program. Similar to the previous year, I had the privilege of working in the Electrochemistry and Big Data Department under the guidance of Dr. Sviatlana Lamaka, with the assistance of Yulong Wu, MSc.

The primary focus of my visit was to exchange knowledge on zirconium conversion coatings (ZrCCs). I continued and successfully completed the measurements I began last year, investigating local pH, dissolved hydrogen, and oxygen concentrations on various metal substrates.

Through local electrochemical measurements, we obtained valuable insights into the mechanisms of ZrCC formation, a topic that had not been studied at such a localized level before. The findings were both fascinating and consistent with the unexpected phenomena observed during last year’s experiments, further enhancing our understanding of the coating formation process.
