Open Science (adapted from https://www.aris-rs.si/sl/dostop/predstavitev.asp) is a modern approach to scientific research and disseminating its results (knowledge, understanding) transparently and collaboratively. Opening up science through the fastest possible exchange of information and knowledge between researchers increases the chances of faster scientific progress.
Open science also aims to increase the role of scientific knowledge in societal decision-making, so scientific knowledge must be made available to people in an up-to-date and relevant way.
Open Science is part of a comprehensive and wide-ranging change in scientific research in the European Community. It is a set of policies, guidelines, recommendations, processes, methods, practices, and technologies that define open science's basic principles and essential features.
The fundamental principles of open science are:
- the immediate and universal availability of scientific works resulting from publicly funded scientific research (e.g. scientific publications or research data) on the World Wide Web without subscription restrictions;
- sharing and sharing of software, hardware and other equipment used by researchers in their work;
- transparency of scientific methods, protocols and experiments;
- enabling reuse of research data;
- promoting fair and transparent methods of evaluating research work;
- encouraging and promoting the integration of science with the public;
- promoting open science practices in other areas, such as, e.g. promoting changes in the culture of research towards collaboration between researchers and limiting competition.
Some terminological definitions of open science:
Open access - making results, analyses and publications available to the public to increase transparency and promote connectivity and reproducibility in the research process.
Open source - in open science, tools, software and codes are open and available to improve the efficiency of the research process through use and further development.
Open data - data generated in research is available for further research.
Open scientific publications - researchers document their work and publish it for dissemination and sharing in places and in a way that makes publications available to other researchers and the public.
MPŠ encourages researchers and students to follow the principles of open science and the recommendations for implementing open science.
