Erasmus+ traineeship at Universitat Politècnica de València in the field of energy engineering

Published: 14. apr. 2026

I completed my professional traineeship at the Institute of Energy Engineering at the Universitat Politècnica de València in Spain, from 9 February 2026 to 27 March 2026. The traineeship focused on energy management and system optimization.

At the beginning of the exchange, I analyzed an existing prototype of a hybrid renewable energy system in the LabDER laboratory, which included photovoltaic panels, a wind turbine, battery and hydrogen storage, all connected to the power grid. Based on the analysis of renewable energy production data, I developed an energy trading concept to improve the system’s economic efficiency. By comparing production profiles and market prices, I identified the need for intelligent trading strategies.

I evaluated different system configurations to achieve an optimal balance between capital expenditures (CAPEX), operational expenditures (OPEX), and revenue from energy sales. I also developed a strategy involving the purchase of energy at low market prices, its storage, and subsequent sale at higher prices. I successfully implemented a simulation model of the system interacting with the grid. Further optimization focused on determining the optimal size of energy storage systems, which will be enhanced in the future using a genetic algorithm.

During the traineeship, I gained interdisciplinary knowledge in renewable energy sources, energy storage technologies, and system optimization. I developed practical skills in energy flow analysis, management of complex energy systems, and the design of control strategies for efficient and stable operation. I also strengthened my research and analytical competencies, including system modeling, simulations, interpretation of results, and preparation of scientific content.

I would like to thank the Jožef Stefan International Postgraduate School for enabling this exchange and for their support during my traineeship.
