In memoriam: Prof. Dr. Ivo Šlaus

Ivo Šlaus (26. 9. 1931 – 8. 8. 2026) actively participated in the establishment of the Jožef Stefan International Postgraduate School, as Professor, Supervisor and member of the temporary Senate, when the school was established.
Ivo Šlaus was an Honorary Member of the Club of Rome, Honorary President of the World Academy of Art and Science, member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, Dean of Dag Hammarskjold University College of International Relations and Diplomacy (2010–2017), Professor of Physics at Ruđer Bošković Institute, UCLA (1964–1972; 1987–2003), Georgetown University (1972–1993), Duke University (since 1981), Laval University (1982), ETH Zürich (1983–1990), Free University of Brussels (1984), Kyoto University (1981), NCCU (since 2003) and many other leading universities. He was also member of European Commission Research, Innovation, Science Policy Expert (RISE) High Level Advisory Body (2015), chair of Open to the World Group (2016), member of the European Academies Science Advisory Council (2013), member of the Pugwash Council (2003), founding member Academia Europaea (1988), member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts (1977), member of the European Leadership Network (2010), member of the World Innovation Foundation (2003), member of the Croatian Parliament (2000-2003), Member of Balkan Political Club (2004), Fellow of the American Physical Society (1985), Fellow of the Institute of Physics, UK (1996), Vice-president of the Council InterUniversity Centre Dubrovnik (2012), and President of the SDEWES International Advisory Board. And beyond his many high-level offices, Ivo Šlaus was a wonderful person, always willing to help and motivate colleagues to strengthen our efforts toward the good of humanity.
Among many significant honors, he received the Croatian Order of the Red of Duke Trpimir with Necklace and Star for special contributions to research and international cooperation on 26 April 2023 and the Medal commemorating the 25th Anniversary of the Fall of Communist Dictatorships in Eastern Europe by the Government of Romania in 2014.
His commitment to the "Jožef Stefan" Institute and the school will be a shining example for us in our future activities, and his memory will live on in our hearts.
