Join the Food Systems & Health Hackathon 2026

On 15–16 September 2026, the Food Systems & Health Hackathon will bring together students, researchers and young professionals at the Jožef Stefan Institute Reactor Centre (Podgorica, Slovenia) for an intensive 48-hour interdisciplinary innovation challenge.

Participants will work in multidisciplinary teams to develop innovative solutions addressing real-world challenges related to food systems, nutrition, food safety, artificial intelligence, sensors, nanotechnology and sustainability. Throughout the event, teams will be supported by experts and mentors from academia, research institutions and industry.

Participants will choose one of seven challenge themes:

  • Personalized Nutrition & Nutritional Health Data
  • Edible Barcodes for Food Safety & Traceability
  • Optimization of Food Production Processes
  • Food Safety & Smart Monitoring
  • AI for Food Labels
  • Micronutrients & Food Fortification
  • Novel Foods & Alternative Proteins

Teams will have the opportunity to develop AI applications, smart sensor concepts, mobile applications, decision-support tools, digital food passports, sustainability assessment tools, data visualisations and other innovative solutions for the future of food systems.

No previous hackathon experience is required—motivation, creativity and teamwork are what matter most.
