Short summary:

This thesis investigates the potential for hypoxic adaptation induced by breath-holding in aquatic sports. Studies examine individual hypoxia response variability, validate a carbon monoxide rebreathing technique for Hbmass, and compare hypoxic adaptation markers in swimmers and controls. Results suggest the hypoxic stimulus in this study was insufficient to trigger adaptation in swimmers.
